I’ve lived in Beijing for 7 years and not even visited the Forbidden City! I’ve walked past it many times, of course, when taking the subway to meet friends or when crossing Tian’an’men square, but I’ve never actually bought a ticket and gone inside.

imageI find this area of Beijing particularly interesting, because in one district you see the juxtaposition of history and culture, and if you take the time to go to Jing Shan park you can appreciate nature as well as look down from the upper floor of the temple inside and see the whole city stretching off in to the distance.

It was from here, on a really clear day in late September, that I first noticed the magnificence of National Centre for the Performing arts, commonly known as ‘The Egg’, which stands just south west of the Forbidden City; and I started thinking about how it represented a new chapter for the city, and for China itself – a fresh, modern, elegant and hopeful symbol of new birth…

image The Egg, called as such after its elliptical shape, made of shining titanium glass and set in an elegant artificial lake, is fascinating example (at least in my opinion) of how a ultra-modern piece of architecture can be constructed right in the ancient heart of a city, and feature as a stylish and dignified compliment to the cityscape.

I stopped to think for a moment as I looked across at the view of Tian’an’men Square, Zhong Nan hai, Qian Men and the National Museum,..and finally, ‘The Egg’, of how all these buildings represented different periods of history, different periods of thought and their respective styles… In one panoramic view I took a short architectural voyage from the Ming dynasty to the 21st Century, passing through art, history, politics and culture in one sweep of the eye.

overview Sometimes I get quite down about Beijing – and all the things I don’t really like irritate or annoy me. I am sure there are many things about all the towns cities we live in or have lived in that we don’t like. So, it’s important that, from time to time, as the American scientist Fritjof Capra once said, we go to a high place in or outside our city, and calmly look down on everything below us to fully appreciate how the diversity, the differences, and all the little details we are used to living amongst, that we never take time to observe from a distance, all blend into one colourful unified whole…and remember that we, whatever we are doing at whatever time, are part of that colourful, unified whole.
