- Background
Steve is a little old-fashioned. He still seems to think that only men can get jobs as doctors!
- Dialogue
Steve: I’ve been waiting to see the doctor for hours. Where is he?
Maggie: Here she is now. Your doctor is Jane Philips – a woman. Don’t always assume that a doctor is a man! Women make great doctors, too, you know?
Steve: I wasn’t thinking. It was a slip of the tongue!
Maggie: Ha! That’s just an excuse! Anyway, the reason you made the mistake is because still many people today associate these professions with men. It’s not fair!
- a slip of the tongue
a slip of the tongue是一个口语表达,直译为“舌头一滑”,引申为“一时口误,失言”。Steve在等医生的时候想当然地问“他(指医生)在哪儿?”这让女医生Maggie非常不满。因为医生早就不是专属于男人的职业了。而此时的Steve只好解释说是“一时口误”。
