This Thursday is “Thanksgiving” – my favorite American holiday. The premise of the holiday is simple yet beautiful: a celebration of friends and family coming together giving thanks for what they have. That’s it – simple, happy, thankful – the very basis, in my opinion, of a good life; the reason it is my favorite holiday.

The actual Holiday is really just a dinner: friends gathering together for a feast. I enjoy cooking the “classic” Thanksgiving foods – Turkey, mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce (although this is a bit hard to find in China), cornbread and vegetables. The food can be delightful: the aroma of a juicy Turkey baking in the oven (it takes about 5 hours to cook) fills any house with a warming smell; fresh baked cornbread melts in your mouth and mashed potatoes with a sprinkling of rosemary spice can never go wrong.
When the feast is done and your belly is full, it is nice to simply sit back and reflect that we are lucky enough to be able to have such a feast, have good friends around us and enjoy the beauty of life.
Perhaps the holiday, to me, is best summed up by a classic American song called simple gift that I associate with the holiday. It speaks to the “gift” of the simplicity of the good things in life!
