Question:When was the first time you did a Triathlon?
Adrian: The first time I did a triathlon was last year in April when I did the Hainan half Ironman. I`ve always wanted to do a triathlon because it combines three sports that I enjoy; swimming, cycling and running. When I was doing the triathlon I felt nervous but after completing the event I felt a great sense of achievement.
Question:Is it difficult to do a Triathlon?
In general it is not difficult to do a Triathlon; most people know how to swim, cycle and run. However without proper training, like any endurance event, a Triathlon can be difficult. Triathlons are also more difficult because you have to train your body to do each of the disciplines one after another. An example of this is a friend of mine who despite training for a Triathlon ended up getting leg cramps in the run because his body was still not used to going from cycling to running straight away.
Question:What do you enjoy the most about Triathlon?
The aspect I enjoy most about Triathlon is the combination of the sports. It makes the training and the actual competition much more exciting than just running, swimming or cycling separately. Other aspects I enjoy include the challenge and the training I have to do but ultimately it’s the fun of doing all three disciplines that makes me come back to triathlons.

Question:Could you describe the first triathlon you did please?
The first time I did a triathlon was in April 2008 when I competed in the Hainan Ironman triathlon. As it was my first ever triathlon I trained to do the half ironman which includes a 1.8KM swim, a 90KM cycle and a 21KM run.
I decided to do the event because I enjoy the challenge of training for and competing in endurance events and since I’ve done a marathon before I wanted to do an Ironman triathlon. In fact I first wanted to do a triathlon back in 2006 but unfortunately could not compete in the event because of a training injury! (I broke my wrist in a cycling accident)
The triathlon was held in the south of China on an island called Hainan and I trained for and participated in the competition with a colleague from work. My mother and my brother also came to support us in the event.
On the day of the event it was incredibly hot and because it had rained the day before the swim course had strong currents so this made the competition much more difficult than under normal conditions. Despite this both of us managed to complete the event within the time limit of eight hours.
The event was special because we met people from all around the world who came to compete in the event. Speaking to these people was inspiring and we all felt a connection to each other because of our interest in the sport of triathlon. After doing this event I’ve now decided that one day I’ll do a full Ironman triathlon which is double the distance of a half – but first I’ll have to find the time to do a lot of training!
Question:What are the advantages of doing endurance sports like triathlon or Marathon?
Clearly one of the advantages of doing endurance sports like triathlon or a marathon is getting very fit and by being fit you gain a lot of health benefits. However I think the main advantage of doing an endurance event over other sports is the discipline and focus that you have to develop in order to train properly and this can translate to many other aspects of life such as work and study.
